Chengdu Universiade | Day 10: China Sets New Record with One More Day to GoAugust 8, 2023
With one day to go at the Chengdu Universiade, China registered a record 103 gold medals. CHENGDU, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — After most competitions concluded on the 10th competition day, China registered a record 178 medals including 103 golds at the Chengdu Universiade here on Monday. Chinese divers bagged four more golds in the men's platform, mixed team, men's team and women's team, as they swept all 15 golds of the sport, along with five silvers and one bronze. South Korea finished second with four silver and four bronze medals. China's swimmers also claimed four more golds on the last swimming match day and set two FISU records in the women's 50m freestyle and men's 4x100m medley relay. Having secured all gold medals in her previous seven events in Chengdu, Olympic champion Zhang Yufei added two more to her collection in the women's 50m freestyle and women's 4x100m medley relay.
"It feels great to pocket all gold medals of my nine events. I also derived a lot of pleasure and friendship from the Universiade, and it's really enjoyable for me," said Zhang. Li Bingjie also completed a gold medal sweep in all eight events, wrapping up her Universiade journey with an overwhelming victory in the women's 400m freestyle. Also in the pool, China beat Italy 12-7 to win the women's water polo final, while the Chinese men's team came seventh after a 9-7 victory against Japan. The last day of badminton competitions became an Asian-only party, with three of the five finals being decided between teammates. Chinese Taipei dominated the mixed doubles, while China swept the men's and women's doubles. The singles titles also went to Chinese shuttlers after Wang Zhengxing and Han Yue beat their respective opponents from Thailand and South Korea in the men's and women's finals.
Birthday boy Li Yongzhen contributed 13 points, as China beat Iran in straight sets to take the men's volleyball bronze. Defending champion Italy defeated Poland 3-0 to claim gold. In the men's foil team final, individual champion Cheung Ka-long led Hong Kong, China to a 45-33 victory over France, while China had to settle for fourth. After pocketing gold in the women's sabre team, France leads the fencing tally with nine medals including three golds. China sits second with three golds, one silver and two bronzes. The men's water polo gold and bronze medal matches will be the only competitions on Tuesday, with the closing ceremony taking place in the evening.
